AI assist

AI assist adds a few helpful suggestions inside a task. It’s built on one firm rule: it generates, you confirm. Nothing is written to your tasks without you seeing it and saying yes.

Turn it on

AI is off by default. Switch it on in Settings → General → Extensions, then set your preferences under Settings → AI.

It’s available from the Free plan up. On Free you bring your own API key; paid plans include AI credits so there’s nothing to set up.

What it can do

From the ✨ menu on a task:

• Summarise a task or its discussion.
• Split into subtasks — turn a big task into a checklist of steps.
• Suggest labels for a task.
• Summarise an attachment — a PDF or text file attached to the task.

Each one shows you a preview first. You review it, then choose to apply it — or not.

Preferences

Under Settings → AI you can tune summaries: how long they are, the tone, and whether a summary is added as a note or into the task description. When a summary goes into the description, Coalface is careful never to overwrite something you’ve edited — if in doubt, it adds a fresh copy rather than replacing your words.

Privacy

To summarise a task, its description is decrypted and sent to the AI model for that one request — so you’re always in control of when that happens (it’s a button you press, per task). Anything you keep in the Vault is never sent to AI, full stop.

If you’d rather your own AI tools (like Claude) read and update tasks, that’s a different feature — see the MCP server.

The short version: turn it on for in-task help — summaries, subtask suggestions, label suggestions, attachment summaries — always shown as a preview you confirm. Vault values are never sent to AI.
